Update: My Patent & Trademark Application Has Been Officially Filed!

A couple of posts ago, I walked you through the steps I took to prepare and protect a nurse-led innovation. Today, I’m thrilled to share a big milestone:
The patent and trademark applications for my nursing audit process have been officially filed—in collaboration with my hospital!

Thank you for reading this post, don’t forget to subscribe!

This is more than just paperwork—it’s a recognition that bedside ideas can spark system-level change. Filing a patent not only protects the innovation, but it also reinforces the value of nurse-driven solutions in improving patient outcomes and clinical compliance.

What This Means

This filing covers both the auditing tool and the methodology I created, which were born from real frontline challenges and evidence-based practice. Collaborating with the hospital’s innovation and legal teams made the process smoother and aligned everything with institutional goals.

Why I’m Sharing This

I want more nurses to know:
You don’t have to be an engineer or tech founder to innovate. If you’ve developed a process, system, or tool that improves care—you might be sitting on something patent-worthy. And yes, it’s possible to do this alongside your organization.

What’s Next?

Now that the applications are in, I’ll be focusing on:

  • Sharing this work through presentations and publications
  • Exploring how the tool can be scaled and validated across units
  • Continuing to mentor others who want to bring their ideas forward

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish there was a better way to do this…” — that thought might be the beginning of your own innovation journey.

Stay tuned. And thank you for being part of mine. 💡
